Spinal decompression is a non-surgical treatment designed to apply controlled mechanical traction to the spine. For carefully selected patients, it may be used as part of a broader treatment plan for certain disc-related, spinal, and musculoskeletal conditions.
At Balanced Body Chiropractic, Dr. Gary Hagner first evaluates the cause of your symptoms to determine whether spinal decompression is appropriate for you.
Non-surgical spinal decompression uses a specialized traction system to gently and progressively distract selected areas of the spine.
The objective is to reduce mechanical stress on certain spinal structures while allowing the patient to remain comfortably supported during treatment.
Spinal decompression is different from surgery and does not involve injections or incisions.

Depending on the individual patient, spinal decompression may be considered as part of conservative care for certain conditions involving the cervical or lumbar spine.
These may include:
-
Disc-related back pain
-
Disc bulges
-
Herniated discs
-
Degenerative disc changes
-
Certain cases of radiating leg or arm discomfort
-
Some forms of sciatica
-
Mechanical neck pain
-
Mechanical low-back pain
Not every patient with these conditions is an appropriate candidate.
Back pain and leg pain can have many different causes.
Similar symptoms may result from disc irritation, joint problems, muscle injury, spinal stenosis, nerve compression, fractures, inflammatory conditions, or other disorders.
That is why Balanced Body Chiropractic does not automatically place every patient with back pain on a decompression table.
The first step is determining what is most likely causing your symptoms.
Dr. Hagner will review your symptoms, health history, previous diagnoses, prior imaging when available, and physical examination findings.
Your evaluation may include assessment of:
-
Range of motion
-
Neurological symptoms
-
Muscle strength
-
Reflexes when clinically appropriate
-
Areas of tenderness
-
Movement patterns
-
Previous imaging or diagnostic findings
Additional imaging or referral may be recommended when necessary.

During treatment, the patient lies comfortably on a specialized decompression table while controlled traction is applied to the targeted region of the spine.
Treatment intensity is adjusted according to the patient’s condition and tolerance.
Patients should communicate any discomfort or change in symptoms during treatment so that the protocol can be modified appropriately.

Spinal decompression is rarely best viewed as a stand-alone solution.
Depending on the patient, care may also include:
-
Chiropractic care
-
Therapeutic exercise
-
Mobility work
-
Soft-tissue treatment
-
Postural or ergonomic recommendations
-
Activity modification
-
Massage therapy
The goal is to address both symptoms and the mechanical factors contributing to the problem.

Spinal decompression is not appropriate for everyone.
Certain medical conditions, recent surgery, fractures, severe osteoporosis, some spinal instability disorders, tumors, infections, pregnancy, or other health concerns may make decompression inappropriate.
Dr. Hagner will review relevant health history before recommending treatment.
